Subtitles is the name given to text that appears on screen, typically a translation or transcription of the spoken dialogue in the video. Subtitles originated as an accessibility tool to assist people hard of hearing, or for non-native speakers to watch foreign language videos.

Subtitles are now used commonly to allow people to watch videos without any sound. In fact, 85% of videos on Facebook are watched without sound.
