What are subtitles?

Subtitles is the name given to text that appears on screen, typically a translation or transcription of the spoken dialogue in the video. Subtitles originated as an accessibility tool to assist people hard of hearing, or for non-native speakers to watch foreign language videos.

Whilst these are still the primary reasons for subtitles, subtitles have gained another function influenced by how consumers have began watching videos on social media platforms. Subtitles are now used commonly to allow people to watch videos without any sound. In fact, 85% of videos on Facebook are watched without sound.
